our story

Route 21 formed from the meeting of two homebrewers, Gavin and Mark. The early beers were well received in Eastbourne and that encouraged the scale up to the brew-kit that once started Unbarred Brewery.  The beers are regularly on tap in an increasing number of bars in Eastbourne, Lewes and Hastings, especially the hop forward, hazy pales like Nebula, Equinox, Drift, Stroll, Selfie and the oatmeal stout Dark Skies.

The Route 21 name is inspired by the cycle route from London to Eastbourne. It’s a demanding, hilly hundred miles and a small gang try to do it every year.

Eastbourne Beer Festival now has a twenty tap craft bar, and Route 21’s Stroll and Dark Skies was pouring alongside some of the best craft brewers in the UK. There was even a cask beer brewed specially for the event called, What Time are the Red Arrows on? (it’s an Eastbourne thing!)

We are very proud that Stroll was awarded ‘Beer of the Festival’ which was a fantastic result and shows great local support.

Our beer is available in reuseable bag-in kegs and delivered free in the local area. There are new beers to be announced, colaborations planned, and exciting developments underway. Most importantly, lots of great beer to come.
